President of the Republic of Ghana and Chairperson of the Gulf of Guinea Commission

The 5th Ordinary Session of the Heads of State and Government of the Members States of the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) held on 13th October, 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria, elected   His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana as Chairman of the Gulf of Guinea Commission for a one-year term, 2022-2023.

His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took over the reins of leadership of the GGC from President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and then Chairperson of the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, who presided over the 5th Ordinary Session of the Heads of State and Government of the Members States, that was preceded by the Meetings of Experts and Council of Ministers held in person in Abuja, Nigeria from 5th to 7th October, 2022.

Eight (8) Member States namely, Angola, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe participated in the Meeting.

In his acceptance speech, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, expressed his deepest gratitude to his Colleagues for the utmost support and confidence in entrusting him with the position of Chairperson of the Gulf of Guinea Commission, and for trusting Ghana to steer the affairs of the Commission during these difficult times.

Ghana is assuming the Chairmanship of the Gulf of Guinea at a time when the Commission is facing dire systemic challenges. There is, therefore, the need to revitalise the Gulf of Guinea Commission to enhance its capacity to effectively undertake its mandate, as well as make it more relevant to the collective quest for durable, peace, security and stability in our Region.

His Excellency the President accordingly intends to lead a reform process to transform the Commission to make it more responsive to its mandate and the expectations of its membership.
